How to Clean a Porcelain Bathroom Sink

Clean a porcelain bathroom sink with a maker-approved mild cleaner and a soft cloth, then rinse and dry. Start by confirming the material: a vitreous-china basin, an enameled-metal sink and a refinished sink can look similar while having different care limits.

Check the basin, drain and faucet separately

Find a model name or care sheet before selecting a stain remover. Some glazed ceramics have specialty surface treatments. TOTO’s CEFIONTECT instructions, for example, call for mild detergent on lavatories and exclude gritty products, bleach and harsh chemical cleaners. That is a useful reminder to follow the actual basin’s instructions.

Inspect for chips, cracks, damaged sealant and a metal drain finish that is peeling. A dark line around a fitting may be a failed joint rather than dirt. If water is leaking below the sink, stop using it until the cause is assessed.

Gather supplies

Follow the basin’s shape

1. Remove toiletries and clear the sink of loose hair or debris. Do not push a pile of material into the drain. Keep jewelry and small objects away from the opening before you begin wiping.

2. Rinse away loose grit with a gentle flow of water. Check that the sink drains normally. If a drain chemical has recently been used or is standing in the basin, do not add a cleaner; follow the product’s safety instructions and get plumbing help as appropriate.

3. Test an unfamiliar product on a small inconspicuous area. Follow its directions and check the dry result before continuing. Never use a harsh chemical to test whether a sink is “real porcelain.”

4. Wipe the upper rim and basin sides, then the bottom, with light pressure. Work around the bowl in overlapping passes. Fold the cloth to a clean face when it collects residue instead of dragging that residue around again.

5. Clean the visible drain rim and exterior of the overflow opening gently. Do not insert sharp objects or force cleaner into inaccessible passages. Internal overflow cleaning and drain service require the manufacturer’s method or a plumber, not a guessed technique.

6. Rinse the basin and remove splashes from adjoining surfaces. Dry the rim, drain area and counter with clean cloths. Inspect around the faucet base without applying basin cleaner to the faucet unless its finish instructions permit it.

Stop before a stain becomes damage

Skip steel wool, metal scrapers and a universal abrasive-powder treatment. A persistent gray mark, rust-colored spot or dull patch deserves identification. Ask the sink maker for a compatible spot-cleaning method, and send a clear dry photograph rather than trying several strong products in sequence.

Cleaning and disinfecting are different tasks. If disinfection is needed, select a product compatible with the specific surface and follow its entire label, including wet contact time. Do not assume a cleaner has disinfected the sink merely because it smells strong.

Keep the basin easy to clean

Rinse ordinary soap residue promptly, wipe water around fittings and clean bottle bottoms before returning them. For business and office cleaning in Orange County, Chino and Ontario, California, discuss your washroom routine with JLV at /contact/.
