How to Clean Computer Monitors

Quick answer
Follow the monitor's exact care instructions. With permission to handle the equipment, shut it down and disconnect power as directed, then use a clean soft cloth and only the moisture or cleaner that model allows. Never spray the screen directly or press harder to remove a mark that will not move.
Screen coatings are not interchangeable
A glossy display, matte monitor, touchscreen, and specialty nano-texture surface can have different cleaning requirements. Find the model number and current support page before choosing a product. Permission to use a disinfecting wipe on one device does not establish that it is safe on every monitor.
Apple and Dell publish different instructions for particular displays and surfaces. Some guides restrict alcohol or other chemicals. Use the exact device guidance when a general electronics-cleaning article conflicts with it. Do not treat ordinary window cleaner as a substitute for a screen-approved method.
What you need
- The monitor's care guide
- A fresh soft, lint-free cloth reserved for screens
- A second suitable dry cloth if the instructions allow it
- Water or cleaner only when and as specified for that display
- A stable, uncluttered working area
A cloth previously used on desks or floors may contain grit or chemical residue. Inspect it carefully. Avoid paper towels, abrasive pads, rough seams, and any tool that could catch the screen's edge or coating.
A careful cleaning sequence
Ask the user or IT team to save work and authorize the shutdown. Do not unplug an unknown workstation, shared display system, or specialized device as a surprise. Confirm which cable supplies power, and use dry hands while disconnecting it by the connector rather than pulling the cord.
Let the screen cool if its guide calls for it. Support the monitor through its frame or stand so it cannot tip. Look across the dark screen in room light and locate dust, fingerprints, and existing scratches before touching it.
Use gentle dry wiping only if the model's instructions permit it. For remaining smudges, lightly moisten the cloth with the approved liquid away from the equipment. It should not drip. Wipe with light pressure in the manner the maker recommends, keeping moisture away from the bezel, ports, seams, and ventilation openings.
Use a clean part of the cloth as it collects soil. Do not repeat a forceful polishing motion over one stubborn spot. Inspect after the surface dries; a mark beneath the panel or a damaged coating will not respond like a fingerprint.
Reconnect and power on only when the equipment is dry and the owner or IT process permits it. Return the screen to its previous position without pinching cables or changing ergonomic settings unnecessarily.
If something looks wrong
Stop if the surface becomes cloudy, color transfers to the cloth, a coating appears to lift, or liquid enters an opening. Keep affected equipment powered off and ask IT or the manufacturer for help. Do not use heat to dry internal components or turn the monitor on repeatedly to test whether it recovered.
A fixed dot, line, scratch, or uneven image may be a display fault. Record it instead of increasing cleaning pressure.
Reduce repeated handling
Keep a dedicated screen cloth clean and stored away from dirty supplies. Agree who handles displays during office cleaning and which equipment is excluded. Contact JLV at /contact/ to discuss a practical business-office cleaning scope in Orange County, Chino, or Ontario.
