A soap dispenser has soap but will not dispense: when to clean the nozzle

A soap dispenser can contain soap and still fail to dispense. Visible dried residue may justify a model-approved nozzle check, but it does not prove the pump, soap supply or sensor is working. Identify the unit, arrange an alternative dispenser if needed and separate cleaning from equipment repair.

Confirm the model before removing anything

Read the accessible label or use the facility's equipment record. Note whether the unit dispenses foam or liquid soap, its model number and the soap currently supplied. Avoid identifying it from the shape of a chrome spout alone.

The current Bobrick TB-99 examined for this guide is for the B-828 automatic counter-mounted foam dispenser. Its instructions should not be copied to a B-824, a sealed-cartridge dispenser or an unidentified unit. Ask the equipment owner for the correct manual when the label and document do not match.

Record the symptom precisely: no visible activation, motor noise without output, an irregular stream, leakage or residue around the outlet. Observations are useful for maintenance; they are not a reason to open the housing or adjust electrical connections.

What the B-828 guidance allows

Bobrick's B-828 bulletin describes deactivating dispensing during cleaning, removing the nozzle tip, rinsing away soap residue with warm water, reinstalling it and checking output. It specifies a soft cloth for exterior care, diluted neutral detergent when needed, residue removal and drying. The guide also warns that the B-828 requires foaming soap and that aggressive cleaners can damage its finish. Obtain permission for nozzle removal and follow the exact illustrated procedure rather than assuming another model twists apart the same way. Read Bobrick TB-99 for B-828.

Keep this limited care step separate from the bulletin's more extensive troubleshooting and system-flushing instructions. Do not add water to stored soap, mix soap products, improvise a flush or take apart the pump as part of routine exterior cleaning. If the model or required procedure remains unclear, stop and refer the question to the supplier.

Set up a bounded cleaning check

The responsible person should confirm the unit, the permitted task and who will perform it. Keep users away while parts are off and provide a clean place for the removable component. Follow the maker's deactivation instructions; do not rely on someone remembering not to trigger the sensor.

For any permitted exterior cleaner, test an inconspicuous finish area first and inspect the dry result. Stop if plating changes, color transfers or a surface becomes cloudy. Protect the dispenser while nearby counters are cleaned so a compatible dispenser routine is not undermined by overspray from another task.

After reassembly by the approved procedure, check dispensing under normal use. If output is still abnormal, log the result and request service. A cleaned exterior is not evidence that the internal soap system is hygienically validated or that a mechanical problem has been fixed.

Example of a clear maintenance handoff

Instead of “soap dispenser broken,” write: “North restroom, second basin, B-828 identified from equipment record. Soap present. Visible dried residue at nozzle. Approved nozzle care completed; output remains intermittent. Facilities service requested.” Add the date and the person responsible for the next step.

A short checklist helps avoid repeat visits:
