Webb Launches With a Universe Still to Unfold
Historical event:

The James Webb Space Telescope left Earth carrying a remarkable problem: the shape it needed for work was much larger than the shape that could fit inside its rocket.
On December 25 in 2021, Webb launched aboard an Ariane 5 from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. Its operating configuration would have to emerge later, through a carefully planned series of deployments far from the launchpad.
NASA's launch record shows the observatory folded inside the rocket's protective fairing. The sunshield, roughly tennis-court-sized when extended, was packed for the journey. Launch was the start of getting ready for astronomy, with crucial work still ahead.
Protection had a sequence
The Webb team began deploying the sunshield on December 28. On December 30, engineers released and rolled up the covers that had protected its thin membranes during launch. The covers moved into their holding positions, exposing the membranes for the next steps.
This is a useful detail to picture. The temporary covers and the working sunshield had different jobs. Removing one form of protection at the correct stage helped another form take its operating shape.
On January 4 in 2022, NASA announced that deployment and tensioning of the five-layer sunshield were complete. The layers help shelter the telescope from heat so its instruments can reach the cold conditions needed for their infrared observations.
NASA's account describes an ordered process involving support structures, the tower assembly, covers, extending booms, and tensioning. The team also paused during deployment to optimize power systems and motors before continuing. Careful progress included deciding when to proceed and when to take another look.
The appeal of this story goes beyond the scale of the engineering. The observatory had to become ready in stages. A successful launch did not make later work unnecessary, and a successful deployment did not replace the optical alignment and instrument preparation still to come.
Those distinctions give photographs from Webb's ground tests more meaning. The open mirror and shield show the shape that the observatory would have to achieve in space. The dramatic reveal depended on a sequence, with a reason for each transition.
Ask before the protective layer comes off
After a business renovation, a much smaller question can still deserve a clear answer: is this film, cover, or label supposed to be removed, and who can authorize it?
Before post-construction cleaning, have the project lead identify temporary protection, permanent finishes, required labels, and anything that must remain in place. Confirm which removals are part of the agreed work and which belong to a contractor or equipment owner. Record the decision instead of judging by appearance.
Once an approved surface is exposed, assess its condition and obtain the applicable care instructions before choosing a cleaning method. The sequence gives the owner a chance to resolve uncertainty while responsibility is still clear.
