How to Clean a Shower Curtain and Liner

Read the care label on both the shower curtain and its liner before washing either one. Some can be machine washed; others require a different method or explicitly prohibit washing. Remove the hooks, follow the permitted cleaning method and allow every fold to dry before bunching the curtain aside.

Separate the two materials

A decorative fabric curtain and an inner plastic liner may need different temperatures, detergents and drying methods. Check each label and any coating instructions. Do not assume a liner is washable because another similar-looking product survived a washing machine.

There are real exceptions: IKEA’s NACKTEN PEVA curtain lists no washing, bleaching or tumble drying. If a label prohibits washing and gives no cleaning alternative, ask the maker about gentle surface care or replacement. Do not reinterpret “do not wash” as permission to try a short machine cycle.

Gather suitable supplies

Clean according to the label

1. Inspect before removing. Look for tearing around the holes, peeling coating, brittle plastic and substantial or persistent growth. A degraded liner that no longer contains water may need replacement rather than a stronger cleaning treatment.

2. Take down the curtain carefully, supporting its weight as you unhook it. Do not balance on the bath rim or pull down a tension rod. Remove rings or hooks as directed and keep them together in a small container.

3. For machine-washable items, use the care label’s cycle and temperature, together with the washer’s instructions. Measure detergent appropriately and avoid overcrowding. Add balancing items only where the washer and curtain guidance allow them.

4. For a permitted hand-clean method, support the item on a clean suitable surface. Use a soft damp cloth with the approved cleaner, concentrating on folds and the lower hem. Do not stretch the sheet or grind at a spot with an abrasive pad.

5. Rinse hand-cleaned areas thoroughly. For a machine load, complete the required rinse cycle. Avoid leaving detergent in the hem or sewn-in weighted edge. Clean hooks separately with a method suitable for their metal or plastic finish.

6. Rehang or dry exactly as directed. Plastic and vinyl liners should not go in a dryer unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it. Spread folds so air can circulate, keeping draining water inside the bath or shower.

Avoid the one-recipe approach

Do not apply bleach, vinegar, high heat or fabric softener as a universal solution. Product coatings, fabric colors and nearby stone can change compatibility. Never combine cleaners or treat an item in a bathtub whose finish is incompatible with the cleaning product.

If suspected mold persists or returns quickly, assess the moisture problem and material condition. Widespread growth or health concerns call for qualified advice. A wash is not a guaranteed remedy for a deteriorating or contaminated liner.

Make drying part of the routine

After use, spread the curtain and liner rather than leaving tight wet folds. Check that the bottom is not sitting in pooled water and use available bathroom ventilation.
