How to Clean Plastic Outdoor Furniture

Quick answer
Use a soft cloth or brush and the furniture maker’s approved soap-and-water method for ordinary dirt. Identify the plastic before choosing a stronger product. Molded resin chairs, recycled plastic lumber and woven synthetic furniture can look similarly weather-resistant but have different construction and cleaning limits.
Before you start
This guide is for sound, washable outdoor furniture with an identified care method. Cracked, brittle or structurally damaged pieces should come out of use. POLYWOOD provides a soft-brush cleaning method for its own products; that does not authorize the same pressure-washer setting, chemical treatment or scrubbing force on every plastic chair.
Supplies
- A soft cloth or sponge, soft-bristle brush and clean drying towels.
- The furniture care label, one approved mild cleaner, clean water and label-required protective equipment.
- A stable wash location, safe lifting help if needed and a runoff collection plan.
Step-by-step method
- 1. Inspect the legs, seat supports, arm joints and fasteners before cleaning. Look for cracks that open when the empty chair is moved, split woven strips and weakened connections. Do not sit on a damaged piece to test its strength; set it aside for repair advice or replacement.
- 2. Remove separate cushions and accessories according to their instructions. Carry rather than drag the furniture to a stable work area. Protect the ground underneath from dirty water and keep the job away from electrical equipment and storm drains.
- 3. Remove loose ordinary dirt with a soft tool. For synthetic weave, gently lift visible leaves from accessible spaces without pulling strands apart or poking sharp objects through the frame. Do not use compressed air to blast hidden debris toward your face.
- 4. Test the approved cleaner on an inconspicuous area, including any decorative finish. Let the patch dry before checking for whitening, loss of gloss or a softened surface. A label saying “plastic safe” is not proof that it suits every coating and accessory on the chair.
- 5. Wash manageable sections with light brushing. Follow the surface texture and use a clean cloth for armrests and seat edges. Replace dirty water instead of repeatedly scrubbing with grit. Avoid sanding, solvent wiping and abrasive eraser pads unless the exact product maker permits them.
- 6. Rinse by the approved method and collect the wash water. Pay attention to grooves and the underside of the seat where cleaner can remain. Do not turn a heavy table over alone or flood hidden frame cavities to reach a last speck of dirt.
- 7. Allow complete drying, then inspect both appearance and condition. White streaks may be cleaner residue, but persistent chalkiness or a rough surface needs the maker’s advice. Restore cushions only when the furniture is dry and its joints remain secure.
Check the result and avoid common mistakes
- Do not use heat to melt scratches or restore color. It can deform the furniture and create unsafe results.
- Cleaning cannot reverse UV damage or repair a brittle support. Keep appearance and structural condition separate.
- Avoid chemical mixtures. Any disinfectant use is a separate label-directed task requiring material compatibility and its full instructions.
Keep it easier next time
Give the furniture a quick check after windy weather or long storage, and remove leaves before they lodge in seams. Store clean cushions dry and use covers according to the maker’s advice, with attention to ventilation. Keep model details so that replacement glides or hardware match the original piece rather than being improvised.
When to stop
Stop for cracks, flexing supports, broken weave, softening, finish transfer or an unknown stain that needs harsher chemistry. Ask the manufacturer about repair or specialized stain removal. This routine method does not establish that a washed chair is structurally safe.
