How to Clean Outdoor Cushions

Quick answer
Check the cushion maker’s care label before removing a cover or soaking the cushion. For approved washable outdoor fabric, gently clean an entire panel, rinse out the cleaner and air-dry thoroughly. A zipper does not guarantee that the cover is machine washable, and a dry-looking fabric face does not prove that the filling is dry.
Before you start
Fabric, thread, backing and foam may tolerate different treatments. Sunbrella’s upholstery guidance says to consult the furniture manufacturer before removing covers because cushion construction varies. This guide handles ordinary dirt and small everyday marks on identified outdoor cushions, not flood contamination, widespread mold, bird-waste accumulations or failing foam.
Supplies
- The cushion and fabric care instructions, a soft brush or cloth and clean towels.
- Clean water and one fabric-compatible mild cleaner used at its labeled dilution.
- A clean supported washing area, label-required gloves and a well-ventilated drying location with runoff control.
Step-by-step method
- 1. Read the complete label and inspect the cushion while dry. Photograph the arrangement of covers, ties and any inserts before moving them. Check seams, zippers, worn fabric and deteriorating filling. If the label is missing, ask the manufacturer before machine washing or using a stain treatment.
- 2. Remove ordinary loose leaves and dirt gently without beating the cushion or spreading dust toward other people. Keep the cushion off dirty pavement. Separate covers only when the cushion maker permits it; removable-looking parts may not be intended for home removal.
- 3. Test the approved cleaner on a discreet area and assess it after drying. Look for color transfer, texture change or a ring. Use clean water and a fresh cloth so that the test reflects the product rather than dirt carried from another cushion.
- 4. For approved hand cleaning, treat the whole fabric panel from seam to seam. Use light strokes and the manufacturer’s prescribed contact time. Cleaning only the center of a mark can leave an obvious edge. Do not scrub seams aggressively or force water through damaged stitching.
- 5. Rinse thoroughly using the method permitted for the whole cushion. Remove all cleaner rather than covering its scent with another product. Keep the wash water contained and away from storm drains, and avoid soaking filling that the maker says must remain dry.
- 6. Arrange the cushion for air drying as instructed, with surfaces exposed and supported so they keep their shape. Turn or reposition it only where the construction permits. Do not use a dryer, heater or pressure washer unless the complete product instructions explicitly allow that method.
- 7. Check the cushion before reuse or storage. Press a clean dry towel against several areas, including seams and the thickest part, and inspect for transferred moisture. If there is doubt about the filling, allow more drying time rather than enclosing it under a cover.
Check the result and avoid common mistakes
- Do not assume one Sunbrella recipe applies to an unidentified fabric or to its foam and thread.
- Avoid bleach mixtures and improvised stain combinations. Ask the maker for one compatible treatment for the specific mark.
- A persistent odor after full drying may indicate a problem inside the cushion; repeated surface fragrance is not a solution.
Keep it easier next time
Remove ordinary spills promptly using the approved method and store cushions only when clean and fully dry. Keep their labels and purchase information in a simple photo record. A sheltered, ventilated storage arrangement makes future cleaning easier, especially when cushions are not used for long periods.
When to stop
Stop for spreading color bleed, damaged seams, mold extending into the filling, unknown contamination or an unresolved musty odor. A professional fabric cleaner or the cushion manufacturer can help determine whether cleaning, replacement filling or replacement cushions are appropriate.
