Can You Wash Zipped Covers on Reception Sofas?

Only wash a reception-sofa cover when the furniture maker permits its removal and the exact cover instructions permit washing. A zipper alone does not provide that approval. Kvadrat specifically warns that some zipped covers are not removable; its Naveli wool upholstery is labeled for professional dry cleaning and must not be washed. Kvadrat care guidance
For an office manager, the useful first task is to establish which cushions can leave the furniture, who will clean them and how the seating will return to service. Opening every zipper first makes those decisions harder.
Match the cover to the furniture
Start with the purchasing record, furniture model and textile name or code. Photograph accessible labels without taking the cushion apart. Check whether replacement cushions or reupholstered sections were added later; visually matching covers may have different instructions.
Ask the furniture supplier these specific questions:
- Is this zipper intended for customer removal or only for manufacturing and service?
- Do the washing instructions cover the finished cover, including its lining, backing and trim?
- Is the filling supposed to stay inside, be removed or remain untouched?
- What drying and refitting method is approved?
Keep the answers with the furniture record. If the label is missing, the model is uncertain or the textile and furniture directions conflict, pause cover removal. A hidden-area cleaning test cannot establish whether a whole cover will retain its fit after laundering.
Choose one of three care routes
Approved washable cover. Have the cleaner follow the exact temperature, detergent, cycle, drying and refitting instructions. Kvadrat's general guidance allows washing certain removable synthetic covers and calls for inside-out washing, a reduced machine load and reduced spin speed. Those general directions do not override a specific do-not-wash label. Kvadrat removable-cover guidance
Approved removable cover with professional-care instructions. Arrange the specified professional process and confirm that the provider accepts the material, cover size and construction. Send photographs and care instructions before collection. Ask how covers will be identified and returned, and what happens if a stain remains.
Removal or washing is unapproved. Keep the cover in place and request the furniture maker's approved care option. Do not turn an uncertain laundering request into an improvised wet-cleaning job. A supplier or qualified upholstery cleaner may need to assess the piece before a method can be selected.
Make the first approved cleaning manageable
For a set of matching reception seats, recommend a small initial batch rather than removing all covers at once. This is a practical way to check the approved process and fit while leaving alternative seating available; it is not a substitute for manufacturer approval.
Photograph each cushion's position and orientation. Use a separate location record to match covers with their original inserts, rather than writing on the fabric or adding adhesive labels. Note pre-existing pulled seams, broken zipper teeth, uneven color and visible wear before handoff.
Agree on who removes, transports, refits and inspects the covers. If staff are responsible for refitting, make sure the process is actually described in the furniture instructions. Stop if removal requires force, exposes an unexpected attached liner or begins to strain a seam. Do not cut threads to make the cover removable.
Inspect before reopening the seating
Follow the specified refitting stage, which may differ from the point when furniture can be used. Kvadrat advises complete drying before use. Large covers may be better handled by a professional cleaner. Kvadrat care guidance
Check that each cover is correctly oriented, the zipper closes without force and seams are not visibly distorted. Keep the seat out of use if the fit has changed, moisture remains or the filling was unexpectedly wetted. Report the condition rather than stretching or heating the cover to force a correction.
For example, an office with four matching sofas might discover that two replacement cushion covers have a different care label. The sensible plan is to identify those separately and confirm two care routes, rather than wash all eight cushions together because their colors match.
