Can Fabric Cubicle Panels Be Steam Cleaned?

Fabric-covered cubicle panels around a workstation with a plain upholstery vacuum attachment, fabric-identification checklist and closed electrical covers.

Do not order steam cleaning for fabric cubicle panels until the installed panel system and fabric explicitly permit it. Herman Miller's guidance for its listed Workspace Fabrics and PET workspace-screen material prohibits steam and water-based wetting, and specifies vacuuming with an upholstery attachment without a rotary brush. These restrictions belong to the named materials and systems; they are not a rule for every fabric or PET panel. Herman Miller textile care

The service decision starts with the assembled panel. A surface that resembles chair upholstery may be part of a different construction, and a cleaning proposal needs to identify exactly what will be treated.

Identify the panel before choosing equipment

Ask facilities or the furniture dealer for the panel-system name, fabric code and care instructions. Check the furniture order and any later reupholstery or panel-replacement records. Use accessible labels or photographs; do not dismantle panels to search for an identification tag.

The cited Herman Miller Workspace Fabrics section includes systems such as Action Office, Canvas Office Landscape and OE1 Workspace. Other sections in the same document give different material-specific directions, so the presence of a familiar brand name on the cover of a guide is not enough. Match the relevant section to the installed product. Herman Miller textile care

If records cannot identify the panel, pause wet treatment and request clarification from the supplier. Do not perform a damp test on an unknown panel to determine whether it is washable.

Clarify what the proposed service means

A quote that says “steam clean cubicles” is too vague to approve. Ask the provider to describe the actual process and equipment, including whether it involves hot vapor, sprayed cleaning solution, extraction, brushing or solvent treatment. Then compare that process with the product's care instructions.

For the Herman Miller sections above, the routine dry-care instruction is narrow. If more cleaning is needed, the guide points to dry cleaning or solvent spot care; that is a reason to arrange product-approved assessment, not to improvise a solvent recipe at occupied desks. A proposal should separately identify ordinary dust removal, treatment of an individual mark and any specialist work. Do not accept an unexplained substitution if the initially proposed process is prohibited.

Prepare an accessible dry-care area

Before a confirmed routine visit, ask employees to remove pinned papers and personal objects from the agreed panel areas. Let authorized staff handle confidential material and equipment. Record which sections are inaccessible behind furniture rather than pulling desks or disconnecting cables without approval.

Inspect the panel before work. Note loose fabric, pulled fibers, detached trim or existing staining. As a practical check, begin on a small, accessible area using the approved attachment and inspect for snagging or a change in appearance. Stop if the tool catches the fabric or reveals a loose facing. A clear test area does not justify switching to a more aggressive attachment.

Keep this work at the accessible surface. Electrical covers, wiring channels and panel dismantling need their own authorized arrangements. If access cannot be achieved without disturbing those components, leave that area pending and tell facilities exactly where the obstacle is.

Decide what a remaining mark needs

After ordinary soil removal, compare the panel under the same normal lighting used for the initial inspection. Record what remains without promising that a different cleaning machine will remove it.

A useful request for further assessment includes:

If a panel is damp, distorted or affected by a suspected leak, refer the condition to facilities before treating it as ordinary dirt. Likewise, construction dust should only enter routine surface cleaning after the site's dust hazards and cleanup responsibilities have been assessed.

For example, an office might have dusty workstation dividers and a stained upholstered meeting chair. Grouping both into one wet-extraction job would bypass the panel-specific decision. Identify each assembly, approve the supported process for each and leave any unresolved stain for the appropriate assessment.
