How to Clean Interior Windows Without Streaks

The quick answer

For streak-free interior windows, clean cool glass with a compatible, nonabrasive cleaner, then remove the dirty liquid before it dries. Use separate cloths for washing, drying and the frame. If another pass leaves the same streak, change the cloth or inspect the squeegee before adding more cleaner. A cleaner window often starts with cleaner tools.

Check the window first

Look for applied tint or privacy film, an exposed low-emissivity coating, etched decoration and damaged seals. Consult the window's care guide when any treatment is present. A pane that looks plain can still have a sensitive surface. This method covers intact, comfortably reachable glass; it does not cover paint overspray, cement deposits or a pane with cracked edges.

Move papers, electronics and fabric items away. Protect the sill and floor with absorbent towels that do not create a trip hazard. Keep the cleaning area clear until everything is dry, especially beside a busy entrance or corridor.

Supplies

A controlled five-step method

1. Clean the surrounding frame first with the method appropriate to its finish. Keep frame dirt on a separate cloth. On the glass, gently pre-wet ordinary grit with the approved cleaning solution before lifting it away. Do not rub dry particles across the pane; replace or rinse the applicator as soon as it picks up grit.

2. Test a small, unobtrusive section. Apply a modest amount of cleaner to a soft applicator rather than flooding the entire window. Inspect the test after it is dry. Stop if the surface becomes cloudy, discolored or unusually draggy.

3. Wash one manageable section, starting at the top. Make overlapping passes and turn the cloth as it picks up dirt. Pay attention to handprints beside the latch, but do not increase pressure over a stubborn speck. Use only the dilution on the product label or in the window manufacturer's instructions.

4. If the cleaner or window care instructions require rinsing, remove detergent residue with clean water and a fresh cloth first. Then remove the liquid with a clean drying cloth or approved squeegee technique. Make overlapping squeegee passes and wipe its rubber edge between them. Catch runoff promptly; keep it off wood trim and out of the lower frame.

5. Dry the edges with another clean cloth. Step back and view the pane against daylight from an angle. Examine the opposite side before repeatedly polishing a mark that is outside. Leave the sill dry and return nearby items only after the area is ready.

Mistakes that create more work

Direct sunlight and warm glass can dry the solution before you remove it. Excess detergent can leave a broad smear. A cloth previously used with furniture polish can spread a film. Avoid abrasive pads, powder cleaners, metal scrapers and razor blades, particularly when the coating is unknown. Never mix cleaning products to make a stronger window solution.

If the glass still looks cloudy

Try a fresh cloth and a small, label-compatible rinse pass. A sharp recurring line may come from a damaged squeegee edge. Haze between insulated panes, scratches or a coating defect will not disappear with ordinary wiping. Photograph the dry pane in consistent light and ask the window supplier to assess persistent marks.

Keep the result longer

Spot-clean fresh fingerprints with the same approved method and keep a dedicated glass kit. During routine inspections, note recurring condensation or leakage rather than treating it as another cleaning job.
