Doctor Who Opens a Door to a Much Bigger Room

Historical event:

A tall blue doorway opens from a small pale hallway into an immense luminous interior of curved shelves and stairs.

Some doors lead to a cupboard. One very famous television door led to an interior that seemed to have misplaced the rules of geometry.

On November 23 in 1963, Doctor Who began with An Unearthly Child. The official episode record names Anthony Coburn as writer, Verity Lambert as producer, and Waris Hussein as director. William Hartnell played the mysterious Doctor at the center of a story that began with two teachers asking questions about a pupil.

Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright followed Susan Foreman and encountered her grandfather, the Doctor. The investigation took them to a junkyard and a police box. Inside was the TARDIS, a time-traveling ship with considerably more room than its exterior suggested.

The surprise was architectural

The program's official TARDIS history describes the original control room as pale and almost laboratory-like, with a hexagonal console and circular details on the walls. Outside sat a recognizable piece of street furniture. Inside waited a different visual world.

The contrast gave the audience an immediate puzzle. Nobody needed a long calculation to understand why the room was strange. You had seen the size of the box. You had seen the size of the room. Your eyes had enough information to enjoy the impossibility.

The official guide also explains the fictional reason for the familiar exterior: a faulty chameleon circuit left the ship looking like a 1960s police telephone box. A limitation within the story became one of its most useful visual ideas. The doorway could promise surprise while the outside remained recognizable.

That is a wonderful economy of storytelling. A modest object can stand for a practically unbounded adventure. The important moment is crossing the threshold, when characters and viewers discover that the place they thought they understood has more to offer.

It also makes a very tempting joke whenever a workplace supply closet seems to contain far more things than its floor plan ought to allow. Unfortunately, real cupboards remain stubbornly faithful to ordinary dimensions.

Give the small room a clear job

For an office supply area, start by deciding what belongs there and who is responsible for it. Keep access clear and the contents understandable. Store the items needed for the agreed work where authorized people can identify and reach them, rather than turning every spare corner into a mystery.

Cleaning products need particular care with identification. OSHA and NIOSH's guidance calls for containers to be labeled with their contents and hazards, and warns against mixing cleaning chemicals. Do not transfer products into unmarked bottles or treat an unknown liquid as an invitation to experiment.

If you find something unidentifiable, pause and have the responsible person resolve it. A tidy-looking shelf does not supply the missing instructions. Keep product information available and follow the appropriate storage directions rather than reorganizing incompatible materials by appearance alone.

A small room with an agreed purpose can support the rest of a busy workplace without demanding a grand redesign. Its most useful feature may be that everyone knows what they are looking at.
